Oh yes Beyonce, move aside – let Dubai upgrade you.

Perhaps nothing can illustrate the schizophrenic nature of our existence as well as the quintessential post-modern city of Dubai. Dubai has seen unprecedented growth – both physically and economically – since the 90s. Currently, it employs about 1/3 of the world’s tower cranes and is expanding at lightning speed. Superstars like Shahrukh Khan, David Bekham, and Johnny Depp own property in Dubai. The rich and glamorous of the world fly to Dubai to get their couture fix, and businessmen come to Dubai with millions if not billions of dollars in foreign direct investment. The clubs are poppin’, champagne and margaritas galore in this Sunni-muslim city, the chic restaurants seem to be perpetually full, and Bentleys, Porches and Range Rovers line the roads. If there was ever an expatriate heaven, it’s Dubai.

But that, of course, depends on what country you’ve left behind. If you’re coming from Egypt, Pakistan or Sri Lanka, you’re most likely going to be living in labor camps and working in construction. On paper the deal looks good. You’ll make $3000 a year, you’ll have healthcare, and your employees will be good to you. If not, you can always find another job or complain to authorities, and the problem will be taken care of. Psyche! In reality, your passport will be taken from you as is customary…for safe-keeping, ok? Oh, and getting paid regularly, that might not happen…companies sometimes don’t pay workers for as long as 6 months to a year at times…and sometimes disappear altogether. Oh, and you won’t have a right to collective bargaining…Dubai authorities haven’t signed that part of the ILO yet (International labor Organization). You’ll live in a 12 by 9 room, with eight other roommates, and will be shuffled back and forth from work in buses…oh, and try not to let the real expatriates see you, they might be a little disturbed. I mean, you’re not really an expatriate, your contract is only for 2-3 years, then you’ll go back to where you came from.

And if you’re an Emirati, then you’ll find yourself comfortably sitting atop welfare checks. You don’t have to work, you have enough money handed to you already…but then again, its not like civil government jobs are expanding fast enough to employ you anyways, even though native Emirati’s only make up 10% of the population of the UAE. Over 45% of the population is under 25 years old, so most of the Emiratis will be shopping in the malls, the women buying designer bags, the men drinking coffee and playing video games. Your parents will be upset with you, as will be the ruling family. Don’t you want to do something with yourself? Become something? What happened to the nationalism in the 50s, the yearning for education, actively being involved in society? ‘Whatever ya abi,’ you reply, in Arabish.

All that glitters isn’t gold. But how can you tell anymore? Things don’t just glitter now, they swerve, beep, swivel…Adrift in a meaningless sea of images, sounds and news transmitted by the media, haven’t we all lost a sense of direction? This numbness is best illustrated by my somewhat extreme caricature of the native Emirati youth. Ironically, the Dubai boom is a result of policies that were put in place to diversify the emirate economically, so it didn’t just depend on one commodity – oil. However, foreign direct investment, and a huge influx of it at that, is very elastic, increasing the potential destabilizing factor in the economy.Even worse than that, Dubai has an extremely low balance of trade, almost going to the negative because of the shopping frenzy that takes place there. So much for diversifying…people don’t even want to live in residences that are more than 4 years old. The shoreline has had to be artificially increased to keep on attracting people to the now literally superficial Palm Island.Now more isn’t just too much of something good -its too much of something different, too many upgrades. When does all of this become absurd? What are we running away from?

Whatever happened to the mantra of moderation taught in deserts of the Gulf centuries ago? Whatever happened to, dare I say, Islam, the ‘religion of moderation’? I’m not saying start wearing burkas or revert back to the good old days of pearl diving and fishing. I’m just saying – stop and take a deep breath. Cyclical time isn’t over, it can never be for that is the course of nature. Linear time doesn’t exist – you can’t be chasing the new iTouch forever. What goes up must come down…but if one is moderate, it won’t be too bad of a fall. Call it irrational exuberance, hyper-capitalism, western influences, whatever – anything at either end of the spectrum is a means to its own destructive ends.
